“It is necessary to find an acceptable mediation between the requirements of heavy infrastructure at the territorial level and the need to protect and valorize the local landscapes. The ten guidelines for the sustainable design of infrastructures in relation to the landscape formulated here intend to focus on this objective. These guidelines have been drawn up as part of the INFRASCAPE initiative, an inter-university research and exchange network promoted by the Dipartimento Ambiente Reti e Territorio (DART) at the University of Chieti-Pescara.”

The INFRASCAPE guidelines are supported by DARC - Direzione Generale per l’Architettura e l’Arte Contemporanee del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali and by SIU - Società Italiana degli Urbanisti. They are also supported by architects and urban planners from all over Europe. The volume, edited by Paola Cannavò of studio.eu, includes an introduction and ten thematic sections:

A1 VALUES. The importance of the landscape: landscape as a determinant factor of design, on a par with functionality, cost and safety

A2 ROOTING. The contextual aspect of networks: projects must adapt themselves to the varying features of the landascapes being crossed

A3 EVALUATIONS. Landscape-based sustainability: landscape-based sustainability assessment as a specific issue with respect to environmental impact assessment

A4 QUALITY. Landscape-sensitive design: sensibility towards local context values as a condition of overall design quality

A5 ART. The new aesthetic of networks: the aesthetic value of networks as an occasion for a critical reinterpretation of the contemporary landscape

A6 TRANSIT. The experience of crossing: transit as a source of insight into centuries of accumulated meanings in the territories being crossed

A7 NODES. New spatial forms: infrastructural nodes as incubators for the new forms of the contemporary city

A8 RULES. Against the proliferation of regulations: design integration as an antidote to the excessive fragmentation of sector-based rules

A9 POLICIES. Effective programming: fostering the recognition of the values of the landscape from the outset of the design process

A10 INNOVATIONS. The urgent need for experimentation: favouring the creation of a new design culture through high-quality experimental programmes
