This book, published for the exhibition by the same name held at the Palagio di Parte Guelfa in Florence from 14 to 30 April 2012—then travelling to Paris—presents the portraits of 21 Florentine families of craftsmen.
Lovely and intense black-and-white portraits are accompanied by original texts—in a cross between interviews and narration—in which these figures tell their stories. Attention is also focused on their work instruments and their images alone, without a human presence nearby, open each ‘chapter’.
Semper reminds us that the tradition of fine craftsmanship is still alive yet solidly anchored to its past. As Antonio Natali, director of the Galleria degli Uffizi, writes in his introduction: “If Galia’s photographs are anything to go by, past and present … prove to be a single thing, because the tools are ever the same, just as the love and pride evident on the faces of those who use them remain the same. They are people who have changed their garb according to the seasons, but have not conformed to the current tastes of a fast-paced and conventional world.”
