The revised and updated edition of the guide to Santa Felicita, a church rich in history and the cornerstone of key experiences in Florentine art, features new graphics and more illustrations. Situated close to the Palazzo Pitti and the Ponte Vecchio, to which it is connected by the Vasari Corridor, Santa Felicita owes its fame above all to the Barbadori-Capponi Chapel, built by Filippo Brunelleschi in the 15th century. Pontormo decorated it a century later with his splendid Annunciation and the four tondi of the Evangelists that frame the altarpiece with the Deposition. One of the greatest masterpieces of the Mannerist period, this “inextricable tangle of bodies moving to imaginary music” (Adolfo Venturi) nevertheless overshadows the many other outstanding works that make Santa Felicita a must for anyone visiting Florence. It is an extraordinary journey through time from the 14th century—the recent restoration of the frescoes in the capitular hall and Taddeo Gaddi’s polyptych is noteworthy—to the 19th century, with Antonio Ciseri’s uncommonly sublime Martyrdom of the Seven Maccabees.
