This was a unique and touching event: not an ‘exhibition’ but the solemn display of sacred images, united for the first time in Piazza del Duomo, the square that played an important role in the personal and professional lives of these artists. Their display was an opportunity to see these works of art in a different light in the Florentine baptistery. The images captured by Lorenzo Mennonna and the contributions of the scholars on hand come together to offer a complete interpretation of the capital event of the crucifixion of Christ and of its three different representations: the ‘rural’ one of Donatello, the ‘divine’ one by Brunelleschi, and the ‘tender’ and fascinating one of Michelangelo.
