Franca Falletti opens the catalogue for the first monographic exhibition devoted to Pietro Tacca with the observation that \u201cthis figure has long demanded careful historical revision and proper critical reassessment\u201d. The exhibition held in Carrara, where the sculptor was born, during the 12th International Sculpture Biennale (Carrara, International Centre of Plastic Arts, former Convent of San Francesco, 5 May\u201319 August 2007) was also an opportunity for a long-awaited and updated study of this artist.<\/p>\n
Born in 1577, as an adolescent Tacca entered the Florentine bottega of Giambologna, the exceptional Flemish master from whom he inherited the position of official sculptor of the grand-ducal court of the Medici. One of his hallmarks was his attention to naturalness (on which\u2014in the words of Filippo Baldinucci\u2014\u201che could not have focused more completely\u201d) that inspired famous works such as the fountains in Piazza della Santissima Annunziata and the Porcellino by the loggia of the Mercato Nuovo in Florence, the Four Moors in Livorno, a masterpiece of unrivalled drama, and powerful crucifixes and equestrian statues like those of the Spanish sovereigns in Madrid, in which the artist combined monumentality with an astonishing static quality.
