\u201cThey chose to stay in Italy. Pretty unusual for penguins like 5+1. This group from Genoa, however, showed from the very beginning an ability to adjust to the rather chilly climate this country has in store for its young designers. SESV presents here a few of their recent works, some of them built, others produced for competitions. Like so many species living here, but endowed with a quite exceptional sensibility to warmth, 5+1 are waiting for the thaw.\u201d<\/p>\n
Done in collaboration with SESV Spazio Espositivo di Santa Verdiana, this volume features seven projects built or being built in Bologna, Milan, Rome, Savona, Siena and Varese. The book includes an introduction by 5+1 and an essay by Marco Brizzi entitled The sum of 5+1.<\/p>\n
The 5+1 architetti associati studio was founded in Genoa in 1995. Its members have an on-going collaboration with the University of Genoa, for which they hold architectural design courses. In 1997 they joined the IFYA (International Forum of Young Architects); in 2001 they were shortlisted for the Borromini Prize, Young Section, and in 2002 for the Mies van der Rohe Prize. They are the authors of several books, including Francia 2013-Italia 10. Non si uccide anche cos\u00ec l\u2019architettura? published by Joshua, for which they have been editing an architectural series since 1997. They won competitions for the new hospital in Biella (1996) and for Aquileia\u2019s new archaeological museum (1998). Their projects were admitted to the second stage of the international competitions for the enlargement of Siena\u2019s law court building, the Ponte dei Congressi in Rome and the new sites at Bologna University. 5+1 have participated in a number of exhibitions devoted to young architects; they were invited to present their works in personal exhibitions in Paris in 1997, and at ETH, Zurich and SESV, Florence, in 2001. A monograph on their work was published by Skira in its \u201cArchitecture Library\u201d series in 2001. Completed projects by the studio include the new university campus in the former Bligny barracks in Savona, the new archaeological museum in Aquileia and public spaces in Savona, Celle Ligure, Sestri Levante and Calata Vignoso in the Genoa docks.
\nIn 2001 5+1 won the Best Work Award for the new campus in Savona and in 2002 for the museum in Aquileia; they received a special mention in the \u201cHoesch Design Award\u201d third international competition.
