On November 30, 1786, the enlightened grand duke of Tuscany Peter Leopold of Habsburg-Lorraine promulgated the new Criminal Code, thereby abolishing, for the first time in modern history, death penalty and torture.<\/p>\n

In the year 2000, this very date has been chosen by the Regional Council of Tuscany to celebrate the annual \u201canniversary\u201d of Tuscany.<\/p>\n
