Constantly renewing itself in response to mutating contexts, the city generates within it indefinite spatial situations: empty spaces resulting from failed projects, interstitial spaces between completed forms, unused plant, obsolete infrastructure and abandoned areas. These spaces are remains, the fragments of projects, the ‘off-cuts’ of the life of the modern metropolis. However, this is also where the city expresses its creativity, where there is space for the spontaneous energy that powers urban transformation.

Is it possible to ‘achieve’ change? To plan possible outcomes? Can the urban project become an instrument capable of governing the energies that generate change? These are the themes tackled by Paola Cannavò through the theoretical reflection and design experience contained in this volume.
