A life of civil and political service is retraced in the pages of Sergio Giachetti’s memoirs. He includes anecdotes spanning a postwar Italy that was poor in resources, but rich in hope and possibility; his experiences as a city councilman and assessor; the successes of his professional life as an accountant to many businessmen of renown (among them the celebrated Gino Bartali); his supervisory roles in various associations (Lions Club, Soldiers Association, Automobile Club Firenze, Banca Toscana); and his experience of incarceration and later exoneration. Fifty years of life are displayed in a vivid reenactment of events connected to a period in which associationism and participation in political life were incredibly intense. Figures like Giorgio La Pira and Piero Bargellini, although distant from the author’s political ideology, emerge demonstrating their own profound humanity and political passion. Giachetti provides a text that aspires to be an impartial testimony, sincere in its confession and enthusiasm.
