Le riforme di Pietro Leopoldo e la nascita della Toscana moderna
Monographsedited by V. Baldacci
On November 30, 1786, the enlightened grand duke of Tuscany Peter Leopold of Habsburg-Lorraine promulgated the new Criminal Code, thereby abolishing, for the first time in modern history, death penalty and torture.
In the year 2000, this very date has been chosen by the Regional Council of Tuscany to celebrate the annual “anniversary” of Tuscany.
In this volume, sponsored by the Regional Council and Committee, nine authoritative scholars analyse in depth the exceptional season of reforms promoted by the Lorrainese ruler and by the competent administrators he managed to enlist, and reconstruct the various stages – from the age of the Communes up to the 18th century – in the formation of the cultural and civic values out of which the identity of modern Tuscany gradually evolved.
