This masterpiece by Giotto known as the ‘Madonna di San Giorgio alla Costa’ greatly enhances the cultural offering of the Opera del Duomo Museum, completes the story of the cathedral’s origins, the theme of the innovative display inaugurated in 2015, and will allow visitors to place both the iconography and the formal structure of the façade by Arnolfo in its original context of art and faith. Mary’s regal dignity was a topos of medieval piety. In this spiritual climate, Florence, a city particularly devoted to Mary, produced numerous Maestà images.
