Catalogue of the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo of Florence
Cataloguesedited by Timothy Verdon and Rita Filardi
The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo in Florence, inaugurated in 2015 in its spectacular new exhibition layout, houses the masterpieces that for centuries adorned the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Baptistery of San Giovanni and Giotto’s Bell Tower, including works by Filippo Brunelleschi, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Donatello and Michelangelo Buonarroti.
This richly illustrated four-books catalogue documents the museum’s entire collection, incorporating the findings of the most recent art-historical research. Enhanced by a photographic campaign curated by Antonio Quattrone, the volumes provide an essential update, offering a comprehensive and systematic view of this extraordinary heritage.
The museum and its new catalogue are therefore indispensable for understanding seven centuries of art and history connected to the Florence Cathedral complex.
Contents of the Work
The first book traces the history of the museum, its evolution, and its earliest works, covering the medieval period and the fourteenth-century decoration of the Baptistery and the Bell Tower.
The second focuses primarily on Donatello and Brunelleschi, exploring their works and the construction processes of the Dome in greater depth.
The third book is dedicated to artists such as Luca della Robbia, sacred goldsmithing, Ghiberti’s celebrated Baptistery doors, and the precious textiles preserved in the museum. The fourth book explores the period from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, featuring works by Michelangelo and other artists, as well as the various projects proposed over time for the façade of Florence Cathedral.
