Ghiberti’s North Doors
Studies and ClassicalIssue n. 3
Series directed by Francesco Gurrieri and Bruno Santi
edited by Beatrice Agostini e Bruno Santi
After major conservation and restoration work of Lorenzo Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise was completed in the summer of 2012, the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore commissioned the Opificio delle Pietre Dure to conduct essential restoration on the artist’s North Doors. These were the first large bronze doors Ghiberti executed in the first quarter of the 15th century, a commission he received following the famous competition of 1401, when he had to vie with the leading sculptors of his day. The experience with the Gates of Paradise and numerous technological innovations implemented to solve conservation problems had immediate and positive repercussions on the North Doors.
