Dantesque Images
in the Laurentian Manuscripts of the Commedia (14th-16th centuries)
Catalogues, Studies and Classicalexhibition catalogue: Florence, Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, 5 October 2015-9 January 2016
The Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana joins the festivities for the 750th anniversary of Dante’s birth with an exhibition of 50 pieces – part of the series of praiseworthy exhibitions presented by the “Biblioteca in mostra” cycle – entirely focused on the great Poet’s magnum opus: The Divine Comedy. From a visual standpoint, the Mediceo Palatino 75 is one of the work’s most interesting 16th century manuscripts. On display for the first time, it is composed of 50 drawings that illustrate numerous episodes produced, for the most part, by Jan van der Straet (better known as Giovanni Stradano), Luigi Alamanni and Alessandro Allori. The 35 drawings selected for the exhibition are reproduced in the catalogue, accompanied by a selection of 14 volumes – 12 manuscripts and 2 printed editions – that traces the limited but significant path of the Divine Comedy from the 14th to 16th century. Also included are the histories of each sample recounted in individual statements.
The volume is further supplemented by an introduction written by the scholar Sandro Bertelli.
